Abraham Lincoln

March 24th, 2013 ~ Well these last two weeks has been extremely hard to get my hours in for reading.  I have had a load of homework and the kids were on springbreak.  It was hard on them because Mom had to do homework during the day.  We live in the country so going and playing with kids down the street isn't easy to do.  I did take them to the Museum of World Treasures on Tuesday, (3/19) they loved it as much as I did.  We were there for 3hours.  I enjoyed reading about the ancient artifacts and historians.  I don't know if this would count as leisure reading, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My dad got my 11 year old daughter the book "Lincoln's Last Days" by Bill O'Reily.  My daughter is a bookworm, she has a reading level of 8.4, so he thought this book might interest her, because it interests him. ;)  Well, she started it and couldn't understand it. She told me, she got bored with it, I don't think she has been fully educated about Abraham Lincoln.  I started reading it and it reminded me of a paper I did in high school about Abraham Lincoln.  I had completely forgot about it.  The first parts of the book "note to reader" and "the prologue" were just a teaser at how good the book is about to be.  This book tells of Lincoln's last six weeks of his life.  One of the first things  I did not know was that General Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant served together in the Mexican War, but they were enemies in the Civil War.

I had also forgotten about years ago I had done a research paper in high school about Abraham Lincoln, but as I read some of the pertinent facts about him the memories came rushing back.  I can't wait to finish this book.  I know one day my daughter will appreciate this book!!

March 17, 2013 Well this week was a tough week for me.  I had a TON of homework to do in all of my classes.  The unit being my biggest.  I did not do a good job of reading for pleasure at all this week.  I just wish I could get lost in a book, but I have stayed up late every night then up early the next morning it just doesn't make for easy reading.  I doze off as I read.  With that said, I only read for 30 min this week and that was done today.
Next week should hopefully be better, but the kids are off for spring break and I still have 3 large assignments for next week ahead of me and a final exam! YIKES!!!

March 4-10
60 minutes read Heaven is For Real.  I am enjoying this book, however I find myself starting to doze off every now and then.  I know this book is based on a child's spiritual visit to heaven, however I have a hard time truly believing what is going on.  I have seen this family on the "Today" show, within the last year or so.  The family all still claim this little boy got to meet Jesus.  I still have doubt about this book.  I am a Christian and try to be positive, but I just have a hard time believing this is true.  Maybe if I went into the book with more of an open mind...

Feb. 24, 2013~ Whew...this has been a whirlwind of a week.  Feb. 18, I picked up two more classes, my husband's Grandmother past away last week.  Her funeral was Feb. 19.  My son was sick Monday - Wednesday.  Had to follow through with my youngest daughter's recheck of her ears on Wednesday, she had failed a hearing test and had been having trouble hearing.  Turns out she had a ton of fluid in her ears causing her hearing problems, no infection, she just couldn't hear.  So I loaded my daughter and my sick son in the Yukon and headed to Derby for her doctor appointment.  She is a little better in her right ear, left ear is still filled with fluid.  We go back in 2 more weeks, if it is not better we go to an ENT.  Then the entire family is snowed in Thursday.  The kids had snow days both Thursday and Friday.  Friday night my youngest daughter began to get sick with what my son had.  I completed all my homework that was not a discussion board on Saturday.  I began reading at 10:00pm tonight (Sunday) so that I could get my 90minutes in.  It is now 11:42 and I am exhausted!!

I am almost done with the "Heaven is For Real" book.  It is really a great book and makes one think about their relationship with Christ.  Before I had actually read this book, I was a pessimist about this child and his accusations.  I just assumed his parents probably coaxed him to talk about seeing Jesus so that they could publish this book.  However, it is absolutely not like my presumption at all.  The details of the pain these parents went through with their child being so sick and the situations how it all unfolded really changed my way of thinking.  The part that really begins to change my way of thinking is the power of prayer, the family needed $23,000 and they began receiving gifts of money from people they did not know which totaled almost exactly what they owed.  Another moving moment is when Colton's father was going to be officiating a funeral.  Colton asked his father, "did the man that died have Jesus in his heart?"  Most four year olds would not ask that question, especially not knowing the man. When the family went to the funeral Colton would stated..."he had to know Jesus."

My next book I want to read is "Safe Haven".  I went to the movies with my girlfriends a week ago and it was a good movie, however I have heard the book is much better!

Feb. 17, 2013 ~ I read only 60+ min today.  The book I read was Heaven is For Real.  It had a pretty slow beginning, however when the storyline gets going it gets quite intense.  Especially when the son "Colton" is so deathly sick.  I could not help but have my Mom heart pounding with the thought of how I would feel if it were my son or daughter.  How those parents must have felt traveling with such a sick child and not understanding why your child is so sick.  The first doctors were not giving them any answers, nor were able to diagnose him.  As a parent it just is very frustrating when doctors do not know what is wrong with your child.   The parents decide to take him to a Children's hospital; doctors at a Children's Mercy Hospital diagnose him right away.

Facebook readings...through out the week

Feb 4 - 10 2013

Tues Feb 5, 20 minutes~~I began reading the book called Beyond diet The Complete Guide...this is pleasure reading to me.  It is not a juicy novel, but it is informative and what I enjoy reading.  This is not your "typical" lose weight quick diet book or plan.  This book is an educational tool clarifying what true nutrition is and which foods should be consumed.  This book in combination with the website give a lot of helpful starting tips.  The author suggests to begin this weightloss program eliminate all white foods for two weeks, no dairy, no flour, no sugar, and no rice basically just proteins.  I tried for a few days and got sick on Friday, so I added a few carbs back into my diet.  My goal is to lose 15 lbs by June, we are going to Florida!

Thurs Feb 7, 20 minutes~~Previously I had taken a test online which indicated which type of metabolism type I am.  I am a carb type.  The other results were protein type or mixed type.  I read about these types.  It was interesting to read each one and see how I did fall in the lines of the carb type metabolism and how the other two types are different.  For instance a protein type needs a high protein and fat diet which is low in carbs.  She suggest carbs such as grains, fruits and veggies.  The mixed type requires equal balance of proteins, carbs and healthy fats.  The carb type (which read me almost to a tee) have weak appetites, tend to be happy with minimal amount of food each day and can get by on small amounts of food.  With this type of eating you would think I wouldn't need to lose weight...ohhhh but the interesting part is by not eating I am actually slowing my metabolism down.  It even went so far to say that caffeinated beverages get them through the day.  I can eat 2 pieces of peanut butter toast for breakfast, then get me a diet vanilla coke at Sonic for lunch and I am satisfied till dinner.  I could not understand why I wasn't losing weight...because I was sending my metabolic rate into starvation mode, even though I wasn't hungry.  Got to cut this habit out!

Sun Feb 10, 50 minutes~~Learning about organic foods and why they are better for you.  The author talks about how toxins are anything your body does not recognize as a food source.  She really emphasizes the differences between buying organic vs. non organic foods.  It is really eye opening.  I  never thought of buying food as investment into our health.  The author suggests this is a way to think of buying organic foods as they are a little more expensive than the processed foods or the non organic fruits and veggies.  It also becomes cheaper in the long run if all processed foods were no longer purchased.  It will be a slow process, but I think I can do it for me and my family, even if I have to put the healthy cereal in the "junky sugary" cereal box for a while to convince my kids. ;)
I have truly enjoyed this book.  However today has been a hard day and my youngest is in girlscouts.  We have a several boxes of cookies to sell, so I bought a box today and had me some peanut butter sandwiches...my favorite...it was a stressful cookie eating day.  Back on the healthy eating tomorrow.

Jan 28 - Feb 3, 2013

Jan 28 20+minutes I read more on the website Beyonddiet.com.  I got some good recipes and read several questions from individuals and answers from consultants.  It was interesting to learn what individuals had questions about and the answers.  I learned that you can purchase "Almond Flour" and use it in recipes, this is supposedly much better for you than Allpurpose flour.  I just received the book I ordered so I am excited to begin reading it.

Facebook readings, I know I have stated this before, I hope this counts as pleasure reading.  I won't document the time.

Jan 31, 30min - I researched on WebMD.com the medication that my neurologist switched me to.  I had a seizure in the hospital when my son was born (9yrs ago) and was diagnosed with epilepsy from that point forward.  I learned that the medication that I am on is also prescribed for those with bi-polar disorders.  It can make people feel tired and depressed.  I have not felt depressed, but I have sure felt tired.  This will not be good when I add more classes, because I have accustomed myself to staying up late to complete assignments.  The last two nights I was in bed by 9:30 and slept like a rock.  It also stated weight gain, one woman complained gaining 30lbs while taking the drug.  Which explains why I have gained 7lbs over the holidays and can not lose it.  Hence the reason for Beyonddiet.com.  I want to eat right and exercise rather than use any diet pills etc.

Jan 31 - 40 min read a chapter from my bible lesson book Barnabus.  This was a chapter was the "Eyes of an Encourager"  after reading we discussed the chapter and referred back to specific areas. "The eyes can communicate genuine interest and compassion.  They are also the means of collecting vital information to be used for encouragement."  This is one of the opening statements which sums a lot of what the chapter is about.
